A MESSAGE FROM OUR TEAM   This is a perfect month of happiness for me, because on November 20, I’m getting married to my fiancé, John Assip. Our wedding is going to be at The Dye Club, a country club on a golf course in North Myrtle Beach. We chose this date so that we could celebrate Thanksgiving with our extended families as a newly married couple—bringing the gathering to the large and happy number of twenty guests this year. Thanksgiving has always held a special place in my heart both because to me it kicks off the holiday season, and because it’s such a family-oriented time. I’m a big family person— and I’m at my happiest when I’m surrounded by everyone. Then too, there’s nothing so satisfying as waking up in the morning at the home I grew up in and smelling the turkey cooking in the oven. Traditions are what give the holiday deeper meaning. We always dine off of my grandmother’s wedding china that she gifted me. And one of my favorite Thanksgiving recipes is my mom’s sweet potato casserole that she’s been making for the past thirty years. Usually my mom is the one who does all the cooking, but this year, I’m helping her so that I can learn all her secret techniques, and begin to make that recipe a tradition for my husband and the family we’ll have together. Growing up, my dad’s side of the family would throw our Thanksgiving bash. And every year since that time, we’d have more and more people attend as people got married and had children of their own. We kept branching into larger rooms and connecting multiple tables together so we could all fit at one table. A few years back, there were forty-two of us gathered around one. My uncle even measured to make sure everyone had enough elbow room. I can’t wait to start a family of my own and share these traditions, as well as the memories, with my children. I’m anticipating this to be the best Thanksgiving I’ve ever known, given that it’s in tandem with this very special and memorable moment of marrying the love of my life. -Jen O’Leary

A MESSAGE FROM OUR TEAM I’m originally from Pennsylvania, and moved to Myrtle Beach with my family six years ago. I’m currently a junior at Coastal Carolina University where I’m studying marketing and graphic design. I had the opportunity to intern with the Insider because I’m enrolled in a business initiative at Coastal called CoBE, which group collaborated on a project with Real Living Home Realty Group. One of my colleagues in CoBE was in an internship at the Insider and really enjoyed it— then they approached me to join their team. I’ve been an intern now since April. I post and update the publication’s social media pages, including Instagram, Tik-Tok, Facebook, and Pinterest. I also help to coordinate what’s needed behind-the-scenes for the videos and photo shoots we conduct for featured area businesses. I love creating, being in a hands-on environment, and seeing a project come to fruition— it’s why I enjoy being involved with video creation and photo shoots so much. I like setting goals and then seeing results. And with social media, you can see that growth and those results almost instantly. Inside the pages of this month’s publication, we feature the behind-the-scenes story of the winners of the ER Home, Real Living Home Realty Group, and the Insider’s collaborative $5000 Home Makeover Giveaway. I set up the Facebook live that we used to share the results of the giveaway. It was inspiring to read the winner’s story and interact with people in real time when we made the announcement. It was great to see the impact it had not only on the family, but with the entire community through their comments, likes, and shares. I’m continuing to improve my social media strategy so that I can help to promote the Insider digitally to as many people as possible. Additionally, I really enjoy the amount of businesses I interact with through my internship. There are so many in Myrtle Beach that I didn’t realize were here. I’m a big advocate of shopping small and shopping local— and I love that I can find this information all listed in one place— in the Insider. – Adara Engle

A MESSAGE FROM OUR TEAM The housing market boom that’s been occurring across the country has been making headlines for months now. And Myrtle Beach has been at the very forefront of the dynamic action. We hope you gain better perspective about what’s been happening with the real estate market in our area from the data and information we’ve included in our front page article, and use it to help guide you in your own real estate decisions. My boyfriend and I have been thrust into this dynamic and changing landscape, as we started looking for a home in Myrtle Beach during Covid when prices fell dramatically. We were taking our time browsing and planning what would be the best investment for us, and then, to our frustration, it seemed home values skyrocketed almost overnight. But with rental rates also reaching epic highs, it is still more affordable to buy a house than rent one. It’s been difficult for us to find a good investment in our price range in the area we want. As soon as a house hits the market, you have to be ready to make an offer that same day or it will be snapped up. I have a tendency to drag my feet with big decisions, but in this intense seller’s market, I’ve had to be more decisive. In early August, we found a home in Conway that is absolutely perfect and put in an offer. We were lucky because the previous deal had just fallen through and the seller was highly motivated to conclude a deal. Normally there are multiple offers on homes in my price range, and a bidding war will ensue. The seller benefits from this, and can usually expect to sell their home over asking price. But luck was on our side; our offer was accepted. It came at the perfect time and I consider it a massive blessing. The next month is going to be a whirlwind of getting everything ready for the closing, but we are excited for this next stage of the journey. The prospect of being a homeowner is both exciting and stressful. And then we’ll begin the inevitable process of embarking on repairs and decorating. Some of those tasks will be more enjoyable than others I’m sure, but I can’t wait to get started! Rachel Ogg

A MESSAGE FROM OUR TEAM When I was a little girl living in the small fishing village of Carvoeiro, in southern Portugal, summer temperatures would often soar to around 104 degrees by morning. Carvoeiro had a beautiful beach, and in the early morning hours, fishing boats would line up on the shore getting ready to head out for their day’s work. Almost every morning, my parents and I would walk to get ice cream at the best shop in the village. Ice cream in Portugal was different than is found here in America; it’s much creamier and has very little sugar, and it would cut through the heat and refresh us at the start of the day. I would get vanilla with whipped cream on top, bigger than my face. Then we’d head to the shore and sit at the wall that separates the village from the beach while we finished our treats, and watch the boats against the backdrop of the sky. They were all different colors and shapes, and a lot of fun to look at. Around 6pm in the evening, when it got a little bit cooler, the beach parties would commence. Algarve, the region I was from, was famous for its summer parties. Thousands of tourists would come to our very small village during the summer months— from Holland, Germany and France— they were so well known. A stage would be set up on the beach, and there would be food, live music, or DJs— people of all ages would dance and party until the wee hours of the morning. These were nightly events; and some of the more memorable ones would also involve fireworks. Today, living in Myrtle Beach, I retain the same close connection to the ocean as I did in my childhood. During the hottest part of the summer, my husband and I watch movies as a form of entertainment. And, since we are new homeowners, we do projects around the house, working together to make our house a home. Our front page article this month highlights some great escapes you can try out when the thermostat rises and you feel out of options for something new and refreshing. A MESSAGE FROM OUR TEAM   July is my birthday month, and since we’re featuring a few of the fun parks in Myrtle Beach this month, I want to share a memory connected to them as well as my birthday. I was 4 years old, and my parents told me that I could invite a few of my friends to my birthday party that was being held at Myrtle Waves. But I invited the entire school— 50 children. They almost all showed up for that party in 1992, and many brought siblings and cousins as well. My parents were shocked; even at that age I was passionate about community and inclusivity— but it turned out to be a great venue to hold that many people. I remember it was tons of fun, and my favorite part was going down a big red waterslide with my classmates and all their relatives, repeatedly. Fast forward some years, and my first job as a teenager was at Wild Water & Wheels. It’s gone through several name changes, but still retains the same feel that I remember from that time. I was a lifeguard there, and that was my first taste of getting to know the community on a broader level. Because I met so many people, it was a great way to connect with locals and visitors and to begin to see what the culture of Myrtle Beach was like. I loved it, and I loved guarding the tower slide, a post that had a high vantage point from which I could see storms approaching. It was fascinating to watch the weather patterns and how they moved from that high up, and when they looked ominous, we’d call everyone out of the pool. Once, I did have to jump in and rescue someone. It was Santee Cooper day, a day when everyone came out as a company with their families to relax and have a good time, and I noticed a little girl who was getting squished in between the inner tubes. She wasn’t being noticed, and the waves were starting in the pool; I jumped in to grab her and help her get inside a tube. The parks in Myrtle Beach are truly iconic of our fun in the sun, laid-back, Southern beach culture. And, they’re family owned and operated. We hope you enjoy learning more about them and the family that brings our community so much joy and fond memories. July is one of our hottest months, but it’s my favorite, and a great one in which to explore the parks that Myrtle Beach has to offer. Megan Parker

Click to view February 2021 Stay connected with our top stories delivered every month! A MESSAGE FROM OUR TEAM   February has long been one of the months I favor most. Deep winter, it’s the time when Mother Nature is at her most still and quiet— unapologetically abstaining from all her usual displays of gracious hospitality. I visualize her message to be rather like knocking on someone’s door and receiving the blunt no-nonsense reply: “Do not disturb. I’m taking time off.” I delight in this nature imposed time-out as it reminds me to tune into my own needs for rest and rejuvenation and opt for more hibernating activities— curling up with tea and a blanket and an enticing book or journal; building a fire; going for a moonlit stroll. And then of course, there’s Valentine’s Day— a holiday I’ve always enjoyed. Pink and red are two of my most favorite colors, and the profusion of their brightness and vitality against the backdrop of winter’s grays couldn’t come at a more fitting time. But aside from the cheery visuals, (and the hedonistic headiness resulting from the profusion of extra cookies, chocolate and flowers) Valentine’s Day has a special place in my heart precisely because it’s the one day that we celebrate matters of the heart. We all have our own personal definitions and experiences of love. But at the core of love’s variegation resides the common theme of relating and the happiness that arises from that connection. Whatever it is we feel affinity for— be it a person, an animal, or a place— when we relate, we connect and feel a sense of happiness because we have the experience of not being alone. Here at the Insider, we always knew that building, supporting, and connecting with our community was important— we’re happiness junkies! And it shows in every page of our publication. This month, we share a few of our area’s most Valentine’s date-worthy restaurants. And Celebrating Our Veterans is a perfect story for the month of love— as it illustrates how passion, commitment and heart really can make a difference in the world we inhabit. This month and Valentine’s Day, we celebrate our community and the love and happiness that it brings. Here’s to the love that we all embody, and all the love that we are capable of. A MESSAGE FROM OUR TEAM   In the North where I’m from, June is a special month to me. In addition to it being my birthday month, it’s also when warmth finally arrives and stays. In the South, heat has already been around for some time, but I still retain fond memories from my childhood, of when the peonies bloomed just before my birthday, and the last day of school coincided with my birthday parties. This month also marks the five year anniversary of the Coastal Insider as well as my tenure with it. In those early days, I remember the brainstorming sessions and excitement we all felt building something new, and how proud we were when the first edition was published and hit the stands. How far we’ve come since then— with a name change, the expansion of our publication to include a wider geographic area, and a new office, not to mention so many additions to our team. But one thing has remained constant over the years— and that’s the passion and excitement that we put into the compilation of each and every edition. As our team’s senior staff writer and editor, I interview the people who make up this varied, dynamic, and beautiful community. It’s an honor to listen to their stories and hear what they have to share with me: their background, what fuels their ambition, and what they offer. I’m constantly humbled by the heart that motivates them and inspired by my task— that of capturing and putting into words what they share with me with the same essence and passion in which I receive it. As I look back and reflect on the past five years, I’m proud to be such an integral part of a company whose aim and purpose is to share the best of what we all have to offer with the community. This month, we feature the story of Brookgreen Gardens. Their mission is one that is very dear to me, combining, as it does, their commitment to conservation as well as promoting beauty and the arts. Brookgreen has always held a special place in my heart because of this, and I’m delighted it made our front cover for my birthday month. Melissa LaScaleia

This is an aspect of business that I really enjoy, because I can think outside the box and be creative with how I’m interacting with the people I’m catering and marketing to. I’ve been living in Myrtle beach for the past three years and I love it here. I enjoy going to the beach, it’s warm most of the time, and the environment is lush with trees and flowers. I’m never bored here because there’s always something to do. This month, a new activity has added itself to my list— the farmers market. At the farmers market, I can always find unique products and goods that I can’t find anywhere else. And I know that what I’m getting is locally sourced— and thus the footprint is so much less than if I purchase something at the grocery store that comes from across the country, or even a different country. For me, that’s important. I also value that the products aren’t as filled with preservatives. I know I’m getting quality items when I shop at the farmers market. The atmosphere is open and I don’t feel as confined as I do at the grocery store. I can greet people, interact with them, and I really like that I can ask questions of the vendors. That makes the experience that much more interesting and positive for me. Our front page article this month gives a glimpse of a few of the vendors who will be attending the market this season. I’m excited that there are so many unusual artisans purveying their crafts— especially the laser cut jewelry. The pieces that she carries you can’t find anywhere else because they are personally and individually made by hand. That’s what makes our farmers market so special. Also within these pages we share the history and mission of the local non-profit, CAN Autism Network. I became involved with CAN through Coastal Carolina University, where I’m currently majoring in marketing and business management. I helped with promoting Richard Sexton’s marathon run that he is completing to raise awareness of and funds for CAN. I’m glad I could work on such a meaningful project. Autism awareness is an important topic for our community, and I’m proud to be part of an event that is bringing greater recognition and support to CAN— to help promote all they provide to businesses and families with autism. Here in Myrtle Beach, spring is finally and fully here. Unlike many other climates, we do not receive the steady rains that mark the advent of spring. Instead, temperatures hover around the 60s and 70s, with mostly sun. It’s really perfect weather. April is also my birthday month! And I usually plan something joyful to do with my family and friends. This year, my birthday falls on the day before Easter. Last year on my birthday, everything in Myrtle Beach had just closed due to Covid. I went for a long walk outside with my boyfriend and a Taco Bell drive-thru afterwards. Even though I don’t have definitive plans for how I’ll spend the day at the time of this being published, I’m looking forward to spending it more engaged with our community. Spring is a great time to explore all that Myrtle Beach has to offer. Even as a resident, I’m excited to spend time discovering new venues or revisiting old favorites. One of the things on my spring go-to wish-list is a visit to Topgolf. While I don’t consider myself a golfer in any sense, every time I go there I have a blast. I really enjoy getting to spend time with my friends in a different environment. I have a pretty terrible swing, and it’s a lot of fun to let loose for a while, hitting the ball as hard as I can— and hoping for the best. For many years this area has been established as a golf destination; there are over 100 courses along the Grand Strand. Our front page article this month highlights some of the best and brightest to inspire your own spring fancies. Whether you’re a budding golf enthusiast, or a serious player, there’s sure to be something on our list to appeal to every taste, style, and ability. Happy exploring and happy spring season! A MESSAGE FROM OUR TEAM This past year has reinforced for me what I’m most grateful for in my life. And in welcoming 2021, I’m taking extra time to acknowledge and appreciate those things— namely, my family and this place I call home, Myrtle Beach. It wasn’t always this way, however. My goal was to move to NYC when I graduated from college, but God had a different plan for me. Over the past decade living here in Myrtle Beach, I’ve discovered a new love for this area specifically, as well as South Carolina in general. The friendliness and generosity of spirit amongst the people here is heartwarming and always puts a smile on my face; so too, does the beauty of our ocean and coastline. Unique personalities make up the South Carolinian culture, as we are an amalgamation of transplants as well as natives. People move here from every place, including internationally, and from every background and walk of life. But the heartbeat, the pulse, it’s still the same small business heartbeat that sustains our region and area. It’s really profound to see the common thread throughout these businesses— the passion, caring and commitment. I’ve come to see that it’s a lot more exotic here than I realized. I used to think a faraway city could satisfy my need for diversity, but then I saw that diversity was all around me. As soon as I moved away, I felt something very precious to me was missing. As I read through our front page article, I’m humbled to see the level of growth in this beautiful area that I once took for granted. To kick-off the New Year, we chose to highlight the burgeoning real estate market here, because the expansion impacts our community positively, and because we’re proud that Myrtle Beach, our city, is #3 on the best list. Because we’ve always championed small businesses, we’re excited to share this information in support of our community and those business owners, both current and future.
